Generally, people qualify for Medicare if they are citizens or legal residents of the United States and have 65 years or older.

You may also be eligible if you're under 65 and have a qualifying disability or end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The most common way to qualify is to have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years (40 credits).

  • Part A (Hospital): It covers you when you need hospitalization, nursing facility care, or hospice care.

  • Part B (Medical): It covers your doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive services, and medical equipment.

  • Part C (Advantage Plans): These are private plans that include Part A and B, and often add extra benefits such as dental, vision, and prescription drugs.

  • Part D (Medications): Helps cover the cost of your prescription medications.

The timing of registration is crucial to avoid fines. The most important period for most people is the Initial Enrollment Period.

This period lasts seven months and it happens around your 65th birthday:

  • Starts three months before the month you turn 65.

  • Includes the month of your birthday.

  • Ends three months after your birthday month.
